The 35mm slide displays a cropped reproduction of a photograph of a sculpture, one of the two bronze lions commissioned in 1923 for the Shanghai branch of HSBC. The statues, which flank the main entrance to the building, have become widespread symbols of prosperity, particularly in Hong Kong and mainland China, and it is believed that touching the statues will bring good fortune.
The lion has a long history as a symbolic embodiment of imperial power, particularly in relation to the British empire. Its iconographic echoes are entangled with the colonial foundations of HSBC (The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation), which was founded upon and in service of the opium trade that formed the strategic core of British colonial activity in the Qing empire.
